Sigholm is improving Stockholm’s energy system

Sigholm has entered into a multi-year partnership with Stockholm Exergi to implement and further develop Aurora by Sigholm (AbS), enabling a shift from CHP optimisation to holistic system optimisation across one of the world’s largest district heating systems. The initiative advances data-driven, automated and sustainable energy production while strengthening both the Nordics’ and AbS’s position at the forefront of the energy transition.

Sigholm has entered into a multi-year partnership with Stockholm Exergi to further develop the SaaS service Aurora by Sigholm (AbS) so that it can handle increasingly complex system optimisation. The system is now being fully implemented in day-to-day operations, resulting in a change in working methods. This change marks an important step towards more data-driven, automated and sustainable energy production in the Nordic region.

From CHP optimisation to system optimisation

The implementation means that AbS will be rolled out at both Stockholm Exergi’s facilities and those of its production partners in the Stockholm area, which include Norrenergi and Söderenergi. Together, they form one of the world’s largest district heating systems, making this initiative unique even from an international perspective.

With AbS, the plan is to move from traditional combined heat and power optimisation to system optimisation, where the entire energy system is viewed as an integrated whole. The new approach means that decisions can be made more quickly and based on real-time data, whilst planning, operation and monitoring become more automated, transparent and user-friendly.

– We have moved from a stable and predictable world to a reality where prices fluctuate, new demands are being made, and what we did yesterday is not necessarily the case tomorrow. We need a new way of looking at the entire system, from customer to grid, production and fuel. Whilst optimising our system’s production was complex before, we are now pushing the boundaries by looking at the whole city,” says Per Ljung, Director of Production at Stockholm Exergi.

– In an energy system where price signals from different markets change rapidly, energy companies need access to tools that help them make well-informed decisions. Aurora by Sigholm makes it easier to see the opportunities within the complexity and create a more efficient and sustainable energy system, says Malin Rosengren, Product Owner for AbS at Sigholm

A key part of achieving climate targets

The transformation being undertaken by Stockholm Exergi demonstrates the responsibility and leadership role that major energy companies are taking in the energy transition. By adopting a data-driven and holistic approach, significant climate benefits are created, with resources being used more efficiently, waste heat being recovered and emissions being reduced.

- The fact that Stockholm Exergi has chosen to work with AbS shows that the Nordic region is at the forefront when it comes to delivering tangible results in the energy transition, says Viktor Strandgren, Management Consultant and Implementation Manager at Sigholm.

Putting AbS on the map in the Nordic region

With this implementation, AbS is strengthening its position as a key player in the Nordic energy transition. The system demonstrates how modern technology, combined with industry expertise and a user-friendly interface, can make a real difference in terms of both efficiency and sustainability.

AbS is developed and provided by Sigholm, a company operating at the intersection of people, technology and business, with a mission to enable the smart energy systems of the future.
